Mourning Mothers March for Healing and Safer Streets

Oakland, CA - On May 15, 2010, hundreds of murder victim family members, victims of street violence, and concerned members of the community will gather for the 1st Annual Mourning Mothers March to raise awareness about the ongoing needs of survivors who have lost loved ones to street violence.

"For decades, Oakland has been plagued by acts of violence which have stripped the community of its sense of unity, security, and quality of life," said Lorrain Taylor, founder of 1,000 Mothers to Prevent Violence. "These senseless tragedies have traumatized the lives of thousands, directly and indirectly. Unfortunately, after one or two news cycles, the secondary victims are largely forgotten, but their pain and suffering remains. The goal of 1,000 Mothers to Prevent Violence is to help victim-survivors recapture some sense of normalcy and dignity."

"We are walking to honor our loved ones by raising our voices and demanding safer streets," said Taylor. "We must spend our limited public safety resources more effectively on violence prevention and reduction programs and on solving more murders and taking killers off of our streets."

1,000 Mothers to Prevent Violence is a 501c3 dedicated to alleviating the detrimental impact of violence through direct, practical and compassionate outreach services to victim-survivor families in the San Francisco Bay Area.
